The Grade B listed Rye Hill House is part of the gateway to the College’s new campus and is being carefully restored and extended to house student support facilities and an administration department. The structural works involve the following:
Renovation - New floor strengthening works to existing floors to accommodate higher loads; new part timber truss roof; new tanking to existing basement; chimney breast removal and support; various large slappings to create link to new structure.
Foundations - Concrete raft foundation for both upper and lower ground levels; concrete retaining walls around north end of site; temporary sheet piling used to form retention.
Superstructure - Stand alone steel frame with steel flat plate bracing to provide stability; composite deck offers diaphragm action; roof is constructed using speeddeck, designed to give diaphragm action to avoid the need for purlins and roof bracing.
Health and safety/live site - Known contaminated ground stock piled during excavation of lower ground slab and used as fill material below upper ground slab.
